Wolf-rayet Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: the Metallicity Dependence of the Initial Mass Function
نویسنده
چکیده
We use a large sample of 174 Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to study whether and how the slope of the stellar initial mass function depends on metallicity. We calculate for each object its oxygen abundance according to which we divide our sample into four metallicity subsamples. For each subsample, we then measure three quantities: the equivalent width of Hβ emission line, the equivalent width of WR bump around 4650Å, and the WR bump-to-Hβ intensity ratio, and compare to the predictions of the same quantities by evolutionary synthesis models of Schaerer & Vacca. Such comparisons lead to a clear dependence of the slope of initial mass function (α) on metallicity in that galaxies at higher metallicities tend to have steeper initial mass functions, with the slope index ranging from α ∼1.00 for the lowest metallicity of Z = 0.001 to α ∼3.30 for the highest metallicity Z = 0.02. We have carefully examined the possible sources of systematic error either in models or in our observational measurements and shown that these sources do not change this result. Implications of the metallicity dependence of Wolf-Rayet winds
Aims. Recent theoretical predictions for the winds of Wolf-Rayet stars indicate that their mass-loss rates scale with the initial stellar metallicity in the local Universe. We aim to investigate how this predicted dependence affects the models of Wolf-Rayet stars and their progeny in different chemical environments. Methods. We compute models of stellar structure and evolution for Wolf-Rayet st...
متن کاملStellar Metallicity Gradients in SDSS Galaxies
We infer stellar metallicity and abundance ratio gradients for a sample of red galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)Main galaxy sample. Because this sample does not have multiple spectra at various radii in a single galaxy, we measure these gradients statistically. We separate galaxies into stellar mass bins, stack their spectra in redshift bins, and calculate the measured absorption-...
متن کاملThe evolution of the mass-metallicity relation in SDSS galaxies uncovered by astropaleontology
We have obtained the mass-metallicity (M–Z) relation at different lookback times for the same set of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, using the stellar metallicities estimated with our spectral synthesis code starlight. We have found that this relation steepens and spans a wider range in both mass and metallicity at higher redshifts. We have modeled the time evolution of stellar meta...

We present a narrow-band Very Large Telescope/Focal Reduced Low-dispersion Spectrograph #1 imaging survey of the SAB(rs)cd spiral galaxy NGC 5068, located at a distance of 5.45 Mpc, from which 160 candidate Wolf–Rayet sources have been identified, of which 59 cases possess statistically significant λ4686 excesses. Follow-up Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph spectroscopy of 64 candidates, represe...
متن کاملAges and metallicities of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: new insight into the physical origin of the colour-magnitude and the Mg2–σV relations
We exploit recent constraints on the ages and metallicities of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to gain new insight into the physical origin of two fundamental relations obeyed by these galaxies: the colour-magnitude and the Mg2–σV relations. Our sample consists of 26,003 galaxies selected from the SDSS Data Release Two (DR2) on the basis of their concentrated light pr...
